The Yellow Wallpaper
Book Cover Design (Concept)
“The Yellow Wallpaper” is a short story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, published in 1892 in The New England Magazine. It is regarded as an important work of American feminist literature for its view of the attitudes towards mental and physical health of women in the 19th century.
The visual style of the design is minimalist illustration built on the foundation of positive and negative space to create its forms. Although it was written and published 130 years ago, the aesthetics of the design will be primarily modern and contemporary to today’s trend to make more appealing to a wider audience. While the story is about women’s struggles, the design does not necessarily have to have a dark tone because in telling the story, it is about women’s triumph in a society that hasn’t treated women equally. To create a stronger balance with the modern style of the illustration, the use of an “old style” typeface that complements well with each other is a key feature of the design.
